Brief

To fill some free days during the COVID-19 lockdown, we took the time to try some new techniques in our home studios. This project was the result of one of those days.

The brief was simple, produce a video that heroes the product, showcases a tricky lighting technique (beer bubbles) and some styling hacks (bottle condensation). For Cal, it was that or walk the dog for the 100th time this week, but Freddie chose the beer (obviously).

Pre-production

We started with a Zoom conference call to discuss the concept and potential shooting styles. Chatting about ideas remotely is something that’s new for us, but quickly adapting to it and finding developing a smooth working process.

Once the idea is fleshed out and a storyboard is created, it’s onto set design and production. In this case, that meant utilising household items and makeshift rigs (knew those books would come in handy one day!).

Production

For this product video we made the most of the textures that we already had access to in the house. One of Cal’s bedrooms boasts a beautiful wooden feature wall that worked perfectly as the background. We set up the scene and began lighting the bottle.

Lighting glass can be very challenging and requires a lot of skill and patience. EVERYTHING IS REFLECTED and there’s nowhere to hide. After rigging all of our lights and plenty of diffusion to soften the light source, we turned on the turn table and got things spinning.

We try and add movement to all of our product-led videos. Be that camera movement or product movement. It’s what separates a video and photograph and really adds depth and detail to any product. We shoot most of the content on the 100mm macro lens and like to get as close as possible.

Designers spend a lot of time crafting that perfect perfume bottle, piece of jewellery or enticing beverage and it’s our job to highlight those details in the best way.

Post-production

Sourcing music, cutting to the beat, colour grading, sound design and pacing are all important aspects of the post-production process.

We pride ourselves on finding the perfect piece of music to carry a piece of social content forward. It must have an impactful beginning, interesting middle and a powerful ending. Once the music is agreed upon we can start teasing the details of the product and match cutting to the beat. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the intensity of the edit.

This specific project was a two day edit and very fun to work with.
