Brief

As part of our ongoing relationship with supporting Myprotein in developing their rapidly-growing YouTube channel, we were tasked with creating the pilot episode for a new series with YouTube superstar and celebrity Instagrammer, Chunkz. Combing our skillsets of producing long-form content with our experience of working with food, the challenge was to create a non-scripted, entertaining and educational recipe video with a twist. The concept was to focus less on the food and more on facilitating a laughter-inducing interview between two well-known personalities.

Pre-Production

After sourcing a relevant location that would suit the Myprotein Kitchen theme and our production requirements, we worked closely with the brand’s content team to identify and test a number of ‘cheat meal’ recipes that would provide the moments we needed to capture our desired content.

Once the ‘Badass Burrito Lasagne’ was locked in, we re-wrote the recipes to suit the filming requirements and sourced all of the necessary props and utensils to dress the set on the day. It was then a case of planning the day’s events and creating a production plan that would allow us to capture everything we needed plus additional content to maximise the time we had with Chunkz and Viddal.

Production

We were on set two hours prior to the talent arriving to rig up the kit, lights and props. This allowed us to start rolling as soon as Chunkz arrived, capturing initial reactions of the kitchen that could later be used in the edit or for social content.

We opted for a three-camera setup consisting of 3x Sony FS7s: one main wide-angle and two cross shooting from left to right. We set up a video village so all agency team members could monitor all cameras live and offer thoughts as we progressed from setup to setup.

We split the day into two halves. The first half focussed on the warm-up segment (pancake race) and the making of the main recipe. The second half of the day saw us shoot the final sequence of the main recipe (after the lasagne comes out of the oven), plus a bank of additional social content to utilise as a call-to-action to promote the episode.

Post-Production

Our in-house team took care of the edit from start to finish, including grading and graphics.

We completed a first pass of the edit to create the main narrative and bare-bones of the episode. It was then time to get creative, adding various sound effects and motion graphics to add emphasis to key moments and appeal to the relevant YouTuber audience.

We then pieced together the various social ads, allowing for both ‘swipe up’ and ‘click the link’ CTAs due to recent changes with Instagram’s story features.
