Brief

Having already filmed in Norway, Italy and Ireland for Season 1 of ‘Off Grid’ it was a pleasure to be invited back to shoot and edit Season 2.

Keeping in line with the series brief of chucking racing driver Archie Hamilton in the deep end to learn new driving styles from different cultures, we began exploring the first episode of Off Grid that doesn’t feature wheels. Enter deep snow ATVs in the remote plains of Northern Sweden.

Pre-Production

We’re now very well versed with European travel, carnets and packing for remote shoots. Either way everything’s got to be checked and triple checked to make sure it’s all aligned. We spoke with over 10 local FPV pilots until we found Matt who had the experience, knowledge and work ethic to slot in to our team seamlessly.

Production

We knew that Ostersund in February would be cold but I’m not sure anyone could anticipate -10C standing out in the deep snow and on frozen lakes for 10 hours at a time.

We reconnected with Rally Cross champion Andreas Bakkerud who we worked with 6 months prior in Norway. He won another championship and managed to find time in his busy schedule to fit in a day of filming.

What a guy!

We filmed this ATV episode over one jam packed day. Shooting with 3 operated cameras and 3 mounted Go Pros for coverage ensured we didn’t miss a moment. Every swear word, trapped ATV and laugh was captured in glorious 4K.

Post-Production

We backed up over 1TB of footage onto our cloud system and got to the edit. Every camera angle had to be synced and aligned to make sure we didn’t miss any moments.

The first draft of the episode came together in about a week allowing a couple more weeks for agency, client and legal teams to offer amends. We then pieced together a fun 0:45s trailer to be used as marketing collateral to drive traffic tot the main episode.

Some kind words from the fans of the Velo Global Youtube Channel…

“This content is f*cking mega. Honestly, one of the best vids I've seen in a long time. Well done all”
